What is Buran? Overview of Soviet Space Shuttle Programme

The Buran programme was a Soviet space shuttle project that aimed to create a reusable spacecraft capable of carrying crews into low Earth orbit. The programme was initiated in 1976, and after nearly two decades of development, the first and only successful launch took place on November 15, 1988.

Overview and Definition

The Buran (meaning “Snowstorm” or https://buran.ca “Blizzard”) spacecraft was designed to be a versatile vehicle capable of carrying payloads into orbit. It had a main cargo compartment with multiple payload bays, each equipped for specific missions such as satellite deployment, space station resupply, or even lunar exploration.

Development and Design

The Buran programme began in 1976 under the leadership of Sergei Romanchenko, who envisioned an orbital shuttle that would revolutionize Soviet spaceflight. The initial design was heavily influenced by Western programmes like NASA’s Space Shuttle, but with significant modifications to meet Soviet requirements.

Buran featured a delta wing configuration, providing increased stability during atmospheric re-entry and enhancing its ability to withstand the stresses of launch and landing. It also employed advanced materials, including lightweight composites that helped reduce weight while maintaining structural integrity.

Launch Vehicle: Energia

A critical component in the Buran programme was the rocket that would lift it off the ground – the N1-L3-derived Energia (also known as Energiya). This powerful launch vehicle boasted eight RD-170 engines and a payload capacity rivaling some of its Western counterparts.

Spacecraft Components

Buran consisted of several key components:

  • Service Module (SM): A pressurized compartment providing living quarters, life support systems, and cargo storage.
  • Orbital Module (OM): A cylindrical module used for crew operations, communication systems, and scientific experiments.
  • Main Payload Bay: Where the primary mission payload was stored, protected from launch vibration forces.

Launch Preparation

For Buran’s maiden voyage in 1988, extensive preparations were undertaken to ensure a successful mission. The Energia rocket was erected at Site 110/37 of the Baikonur Cosmodrome and fueled with liquid hydrogen (LH2) and oxygen.

Buran itself underwent rigorous testing and preparation before being mounted atop the Energia launch stack. Following the launch, a complex set of procedures would execute rendezvous maneuvers between the spacecraft and its payload.

Mission Profile

During Buran’s initial flight in 1988:

  • Launch took place from Site 110/37 on November 15th.
  • The vehicle soared into space using six RD-170 engines under Energia.
  • After reaching orbit, it conducted two orbital evolutions around the Earth at approximately 28 kilometers (17.4 miles) per second.
  • Buran then successfully deployed a dummy payload – part of its original intended mission.

Orbit and Descent

Post-mission analysis revealed that after completing its planned orbits:

  1. Re-entry phase began : The crew compartment separated from the Orbital Module, initiating re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere.
  2. Heat shield deployment: Protecting both modules during descent, Buran employed a multi-layered heat shield system.

Failure Analysis and Programme Termination

In 1993, just before its planned next launch:

  • Engineers noticed issues with the main cargo compartment; concerns about engine efficiency also arose in late model Energias.
  • Program funding was eventually cut back to focus on other priorities.
